Pirates sign two veteran pitchers to one-year deals

Pittsburgh (WJAC) — The Pittsburgh Pirates signed a pair of free agent pitchers Tuesday to one-year deals, according to multiple reports. Veteran right-hander Vince Velasquez signed a deal worth over $3 million. The 30-year-old posted a 4.78 ERA in 2022 over 9 starts and 18 relief appearances with the Chicago White Sox. Velasquez previously spent over five seasons with the Phillies, one full season with the Astros and part of a season with the Padres.

Severe storms kill 4 in Houston, cause widespread power outages and risk of tornadoes

HOUSTON (AP) — Fast-moving thunderstorms pummeled southeastern Texas for the second time this month, killing at least four people, blowing out windows in high-rise buildings, downing trees and knocking out power to more than 900,000 homes and businesses in the Houston area. Officials urged residents to keep off roads following Thursday's storms, as many were impassable and traffic lights were out. The storm system moved through swiftly, but flood watches and warnings remained Friday for Houston and areas to the east.

Woman acquitted in death of girl, 4, left in hot SUV

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — A woman has been acquitted in the death of a 4-year-old girl who central Pennsylvania prosecutors say was left for hours in a hot sport utility vehicle. Jurors deliberated for about three hours Friday before acquitting 30-year-old Brittany Borgess of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment and recklessly endangering. Lycoming County Senior Judge Dudley Anderson found her guilty of the summary charge of leaving a child unattended in a car and fined her $25.

Governor says budget passed because 'everybody wanted to go home'

(TCS) — Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is heralding a budget that Republicans say was crammed down taxpayers' throats in the dead of night. After the Senate approved the state budget package late in the evening Sunday, the House took the measure up in the early morning hours Wednesday. The measure spends $53.1 billion and increases a variety of taxes on businesses by about $730 million. State Rep. Patrick Windhorst, R-Metropolis, called out Democrats in the supermajority for violating their own rules by attempting to concur on one of the measures three times when rules only allow two attempts.

Local bars fear losing business if Clean Indoor Air Act expands

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Some state lawmakers are calling to end smoking in all Pennsylvania bars, casinos, and private clubs for good. This bill would expand the Clean Indoor Act. One local Johnstown bar says their business will take a hit if this bill gets approved. “It's not the right of other people to make a decision for themselves,” part-owner of Rocky’s Tavern Anna Mae Rager said. “If you don't want to smoke at a bar then don't come in.
